Every year, the city we live in hosts a "large trash pickup" otherwise known as Tidy Town. It's a chance for residents to put - for free - out any trash that your normal service doesn't pick up. You end up seeing lots of old furniture (OK, so my neighbor kitty-corner from us just brought out a toilet and an old bathroom vanity; he's actually adjusting the position of the toilet and it's kinda funny), construction remnants and other general junk.
What's really interesting are the...folks...who wander the neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, we don't live in a ritzy neighborhood, just a 1950s area with modest homes. But, on the eve of Tidy Town pickup, we're inundated with visitors from other communities. They come with trucks with trailer beds attached, with vans...one just drove past with large rust stains and a neighboring county's plates. And, I don't blame them - sometimes you can find good stuff! The neighbors across the street just came home from a walk with their dogs and I saw them carrying a nice stool that they must have found on the curb along the way!
Years ago, Brian and I were given a white leather couch and loveseat from a friend - hand-me-downs. The couch was too big to fit in our little house, but we put the love seat in the den. The couch went into our storage shed and became a home for mice. The first year we were here for a Tidy Town, we dragged the gross couch to the curb along with other various remnants. We went out to dinner and came home to a much-reduced pile and a hysterically laughing next-door neighbor. She had come home and found a couple sitting on the mouse-dropping ridden couch MAKING OUT! Can you even imagine? By the time we woke up the next morning, the couch was gone.
We've weeded out most of our cra& over the years and don't have much to put out tonight, though we do have some horribly old speakers that have been christened by too many male greyhounds to mention and a few odds and ends. Who wants to guess how quickly it will all vanish?
