The beginning of a countdown to leave for a change of Russian scenery

We're. Still. Here.

Yep. We're still waiting on Russian passports before heading to Moscow for an interview next week with the US Embassy for their visas to get into the US. We are supposed to leave for Moscow a week from today, which means we FINALLY can start to countdown - i.e. this is our LAST Monday night in this hotel, our last Tuesday, etc. Last week was long and didn't seem to end and it was hard knowing there were still so many days behind it before we could leave. Now while we don't really see a light at the end of the tunnel quite yet we at least know there is an end to the tunnel and there should be light soon. Just being able to write "next week" about Moscow is psychologically huge for us. Change of scenery, change of food, one step closer to home.

This week is all about breaking things up. We've met another family here who adopted a 7-year-old boy and are also waiting for his passport. Today we all went to a park together; while it wasn't a new park it at least felt a bit different. Tomorrow we'll try to eat lunch out, which we typically don't do; Wednesday we'll go buy some souveniers for the girls. The rest is TBD. We have started going "swimming" in the spa here; they have water wings for the girls. It's a small spa-type pool but it gives us something to break up the monotony. We'll do that every other day - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Baths will be in the rotation the other days, thought they typically end badly unless dinner IMMEDIATELY follows. We're also working on getting them to understand that it takes us time to prepare their dinner and that we know they want it right then but that we will give it to them no matter what.

We're also battling nap and bedtime issues and it's so hard to know what to do while we're here. Do we fight to stay on the schedule the orphanage said they were on? Do we try to phase out naps, or is that too much too soon? Our situation is just so difficult in this little hotel room; if we leave after wind-down time they get upset which we don't feel right about but if we're in the room there's too much energy and I feel like we're interfering with their abiity to get to sleep because they want to play and giggle and do something to get our attention. I know many of this will also happen at home, but there we have more options than we have here. Right now is typically naptime but we're taking a risk and seeing what happens without one. We don't know if we'll have total meltdowns tonight but we have to start experimenting because what we've been doing really isn't working.

Despite the challenges we are beginning to gel; there's a lot of new for everyone so we just do our best to be understanding of them and of ourselves. We just are so ready to be home to begin the true adjustment there and not in this odd place with so many limitations.

Ah...so many unknowns. Being a parent is all about experiments. You try this and hope it works. If not, you try something different. By the time something works really well...they want something different.
Just remember the mountain of paperwork you did to get here. This is just the end of the line. Trust me, it is BRIGHT. It is supposed to be 100 today. Hope you are having better weather.

You gotta love the spa in that hotel--my husband and I got a few laughs while we were there. Have you seen the bucket of water with the rope that you pull to pour water over your head?
Hang in there. We love the updates.

You know, the bathtime/meal time thing is interesting. Sasha did (and still does) demand her food immediately when hungry...and it stresses me out because it is annoying and I only have two hands. However, it seems that, once we started breaking down the day's schedule for her things got better. (i.e. we are going to eat breakfast, go to the park, go to the store, eat lunch, and go nite-nite) and repeat when she woke up from nap.
Do you have materials to draw pictures of the general schedule with? Draw the bathtub and then draw their plates and try to explain it? Maybe draw a moon or something for bed time? Maybe that will help??

Our kids' (7 and 4)naps went out the window as soon as I got custody. They never took a nap while we were in Russia and since we have been home (October 2009) they still haven't taken one. So good luck! You guys are doing great and soon you will be home and can adjust to homelife which will be wonderful for your family of four!

Read your comments with interest and really appreciate the photos!Eight more days and a wake-up, or something like that...feeling like "Comrade Grandfather" and would love to visit Russia someday. My friend Vera still has an apartment in Moscow. We are having a heat-wave here in Overland Park; may hit 100F today. Everyone is wishing you well!Love,p

I like what Allison suggests about drawing the schedule. Is there anything they can do to help with meal prep? Hold a box, hold a bowl? Hold/eat a cracker in each hand? The nap will probably be gone soon after your timezone readjustment at home - maybe for now just some books to read for a 'quiet' time? We were told to not put much faith in the 'schedule' we were given. For bath - it was too stimulating for us - so it became a morning activity. Keep up the good work and act with all the confidence in the world. Then the girls will figure that what they are experiencing is exactly how you wanted things to go!

I've never been in a hotel room with toddlers for an extended amount of time so I think anything goes during that time. Unfortunately that's not much help right now. However, you know all the sleep problems we've had. Don't give up on the thought of a nap quite yet. That could be a saving grace for a new mom once you get home. I have my sleep book that I'll gladly let you borrow upon your return. I'll have to check but I think it might even have a section on adoption situations.-Alana

Someone wise once told me not to stress about having everything in order. Things can slide here and there because they will be just fine without a bath/nap.
It also help with the relationship with the spouse because you are in a better frame of mind/mood....
Hang in there for you've gotten through last week already :)
